:. Misc .:. Model Year Differences
DSM's changed constantly, and subtly over the years, and there are some differences between the Eclipses and Talons as well.
Notes: Tranny differences?
AWD/DOHC turbo sticker differences?
wheel differences?
ground effects differences
1990
This was the first year of the Talon/Eclipse/Laser cars. Started production in late '89 as '90 model year cars. As a first-year production, the '90's have a lot of specific parts that do not work on later year cars.
These cars have the popup lights present on only the 90/91 cars, along with the 6-bolt "big rod" blocks, 3-bolt rear ends.
Unique '90 Parts:
- Throttle body (and ISC, TPS, etc)
- ECU (pins #6 and #14 are swapped. Those are the wires for the MAS reset and the Idle closed switch)
- shifter (longer throw)
- transmission select lever (~1/2" shorter)
- coil pack and power transistor
- Crank Angle Sensor (CAS) and wiring
- fuel rail has shorter neck on intake side (won't work for SteveTek AN mod)
- 15/16" brake master cylinder vs 1" on all later years
- front-mounted air-to-oil oil cooler
Talons were available with the two-tone color-over-silver. Talon tailights are slightly different, and also possess the longer 5-piece wing, versus the Eclipse's 3 piece wing (which was retained all five years).
1991
No cosmetic changes I'm aware of. 6-bolt engines retained, 3-bolt rears, single-piston front brake calipers.
These cars have the popup lights present on only the 90/91 cars.
Changes:
- Unique parts listed above changed to newer style
- ABS available as an option (but not with LSD's)
- 1" brake master cylinder, vs 15/16"
- "sandwich" style water-cooled oil cooler
- mid-year change from 22-spline to 23-spline
1992
This year was the first year of the fixed-light 1g's, which hung around until the end of the 1g's line in MY '94. Converting earlier cars to 92-94 style is simple - fastening points remain the same.
Changes:
- Fixed lights
- new hood, fenders, front fascia to accomodate fixed lights
- ABS available as an option with LSD's
- mid-year switch to 7-bolt blocks with "small" rods
- Talon: New taillights (amber turn signals) and rear bumpers (see below)
- Talon: New 3-piece wing (different from Eclipse wing)
- Eclipse: slightly different new rear bumper cover
Mid-year, the switch was made from 22-spline transfer-case inputs to the later 23-spline count.
