Introduction
The stock MAS (Mass Airflow Sensor) on 1g cars is a bit limiting. For a little while, you can get by by hacking the MAS, which basically means cutting the bottom half off. This worked great for me with my 16g, but once I had the L1R, the 1g MAS was dropping counts at as little as 17psi above 5000 RPM.
One solution is an HKS VPC, but they are getting more rare, cost about $700-$1,000 if you can find one, and are less than ideal for daily livability. As well, you can go with a standalone engine management system, but the cost and complexity is enormous. So, the easy and simple solution is to install a second generation MAS. Not only is the 2g MAS larger, it has a wider range of Hz counts, so it will buy you more headroom until you need to worry about further engine management issues.
Since I originally began writing this article, the "MAFT" engine translator has become available to use GM 3" MAF's in DSM's. I have not done any research on the matter, as the 2g MAS is sufficing for now, but that may be the next easy upgrade, should the 2g mas ultimately prove insufficient. Search on NABR or DSMTalk for information, as there will likely be some threads there.
Installation Notes
Before reading any further, you may want to check out Tom Stangl's 2g MAS VFAQ on VFAQ.com, in the intake section.
The 2g MAS plug and the 1g MAS plug are very different, so you will need to build an adapter so that your 1g car can interface to the 2g plug. Of all the methods possible to do this, I recommend building an adapter harness so that if you ever need to, you can easily remove your adapter harness and re-plug your car back into a 1g MAS. You can find a 1g MAS for next to nothing at a salvage yard, and break the connector out of it for use in the new harness. (figs 1-3)
The color tables on the VFAQ confused me a bit, so I just ended up making a mapping of the various pins and such, and using that to make my harness. Here is a table that will help you create a mapping for whatever plugs you have:
Your 2g Harness:
| Pin# | Color | Function |
| 1 | | +5 volts |
| 2 | | Baro sensor |
| 3 | | Airflow Signal |
| 4 | | MPI Ctrl Relay |
| 5 | | Ground |
| 6 | | Intake Air Temp |
| 7 | | Volume airflow (some idle thing) |
Pin Mapping Translation:
| 2g Pin# | Maps To | 1g Pin # |
| 1 | --> | 4 |
| 2 | --> | 7 |
| 3 | --> | 2 |
| 4 | --> | 3 |
| 5 | --> | 6 |
| 6 | --> | 8 |
| 7 | --> | 1 |
From these two tables, and using the color information on the VFAQ page, you can then just work backwards, figuring out which wire from the 2g harness needs to be soldered to which pin on the 1g MAF connector.
Be Sure to test for continuity in all your connections after you're done, and make sure that you have continuity on only one wire - you don't want to be chasing a short!
Once you are happy with your soldering, it would be good idea to hot-glue your connector to weatherproof it, and make it more sturdy.
One note about installing the MAS itself, the MAF is physically longer than the 1g MAS, so your air filter will sit closer to the passenger fender than before. For me, this makes getting my intake in and out a bear without removing the UIC first. With your Dejon intake pipe, you may also want to order the 1g air filter -> 2g MAS adapter.
Impressions
What a great mod!
My primary reason for going to the 2g MAS - dropped counts - has been completely alleviated. I've run up to 25psi boost so far on the L1R, and seen counts over 2500Hz without any problems at all. Part-throttle drivability is improved, and getting the fuel trims a bit more stable has proved much easier as well. If you're starting to reach the limits of the 1g MAS, then this is a nice, simple, inexpensive upgrade for your 1g DSM.
