La Junta 2008.06.21

The June club race at La Junta was a good one this year, here's the skinny from 9News:

LA JUNTA - The Sports Car Club of America ran its second event of the season June 21 and 22 at the race track in La Junta, Colorado.

The event included what are called "PSR"s – or Prehistoric Sports Racers.

Six PSR's were present for this double-race weekend, in a field of about 20 assorted formula cars and sports racers, collectively known as the "Wings-and-Things" group. The track at La Junta is newly repaved, and it took a few laps for drivers to shake off the rust.

Despite a shortened session due to contact between two drivers, quick times were set by several PSR drivers, each dipping into the 51 second range on this 1.7 mile race track, for an average speed of over 110 mph!

Saturday's race saw Jake Latham on the pole in his SCRPerformance.com Radical, with Paul Leonard (DrivingForceMotorsports.com) and Lawrence Edwards not far behind. Latham and Edwards got excellent jumps at the start, leading Leonard into the 130mph turn two. The trio remained separated by no more than a second for the first five laps of the race, until contact with a curb caused Edwards to drop out. Leonard chased Latham closely for several more laps before spinning on the exit of turn five. Joe Weathers in his Wood'n It Be Nice Radical SR4 came from fourth to close quickly on Latham in the closing stages of the race, but in the end, it was Latham taking the flag-to-flag win in PSR.

Sunday's race was even more exciting than Saturday, due to a worsening track surface. 110 degree heat and new asphalt combined to create very slippery conditions in the turn four-five chicane, requiring drivers to exercise every ounce of car control they possessed. Jake Latham once again qualified on pole with a record-breaking 50.5 second lap, with Joe Weathers second, and Paul Leonard once again very closely behind. Latham got an excellent start once more, with Leonard and Weathers racing absolutely inches apart all the way up to turn three. In lap one, several cars went off-track at turn five due to the slippery conditions, including Weathers in his SR4. Leonard followed Latham for a few laps, then expertly used slower traffic to execute a perfect pass. The duo circled the track in lockstep for the next few laps, slicing through traffic, before an unlucky spin in turn four took Leonard out of the lead, and out of the race. At the checker, it was once again Latham crossing the finish line first.
