BMW Test Day
Lot of fun at the BMW event. 8 runs. Had fun joking around with the folks there too - just seems like you get to do a lot more at these events.
In response to my impressions from the RMSolo event a few weeks back, I reduced the gas pressures to 100psi in the shocks to try and handle bumps a bit better. In addition, I finally got sick of screwing around with the front Nik bar, so I removed that. I sure couldn't tell much of a difference with it gone, and the increase in user-friendliness is worth it to me. Jury is still out on the rear bar.
The 100psi change in shocks was a good change, the car definitely handled the bumps better. This is a move in the right direction, it would seem.

 scruffy!

Runs 1 and 2, the car had horrid understeer, especially trying to power out of corners. On run 3, to see if anything changed, I disconnected the rear swaybar, and could tell no difference. The car may have put power down better, but it'd be hard to say, really.
For run 4, I turned the rear bump up to 3, to see if that would fix the corner-exit problem. Slight difference, but not much. The car definitely was hitting bumps harder, and somehow felt different. Tough to say.

In the afternoon, for run 5, I ran the car the same, on cold tires, to see what it was like. Fine enough. For run 6, I raised the rear 4 turns, and *THAT* was finally the magic bullet. The car was much more neutral mid-corner, and the power-on understeer was markedly reduced. For run 7, I raised the rear 4 more turns, and that improved things further - the car was easier still to drive. On run 8, I left everything alone, and went faster than I had all day. So, the rear ride height makes a HUGE difference for this car. |
I continually moved the brake bias towards the front of the car all day, and it seems to be getting close, although still too much towards the rear.
For Next Time
I will have to do a set-down measurement on this setup, and see what I discover. Not having the bars is nice, since it sure simplifies my tuning equation. It is time to do some more testing at IMI!
